- Heat the butter or olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour to create a smooth roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste.
- Gradually add your choice of Publix Milk Isle milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
- Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir continuously and simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
- Use immediately or let cool and store for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
Notes
This base pairs well with pasta, roasted vegetables, or baked chicken. For dairy-free versions, use oat or almond milk and plant-based butter.
