  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Publix Milk Isle milk of choice whole milk, almond milk, or lactose-free
  • 0.5 tsp salt adjust to taste
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 1 pinch nutmeg optional

Method
 

  1. Heat the butter or olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour to create a smooth roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste.
  3. Gradually add your choice of Publix Milk Isle milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir continuously and simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
  5. Use immediately or let cool and store for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Notes

This base pairs well with pasta, roasted vegetables, or baked chicken. For dairy-free versions, use oat or almond milk and plant-based butter.
