Halloween recipes · Simple seasonal food
Oreo bat cookies turn chocolate sandwich cookies into small winged Halloween treats. Each bat has a whole cookie body, two crisp cookie wings and a pair of candy eyes. Melted chocolate acts as the glue, so there is no baking and no frosting to mix before you start assembling the tray.
Before you start
Separate the wing cookies carefully and remove their filling before cutting the chocolate wafers. A few may break while you find the right pressure, so keep extra cookies available. Use a small serrated knife with a gentle sawing motion; pressing straight down is more likely to shatter the thin wafers.

Oreo Bat Cookies Recipe
Ingredients
- 12 whole chocolate sandwich cookies, for the bodies
- 8 additional chocolate sandwich cookies, for wings and spares
- 3 ounces (85 g) semisweet chocolate chips
- 24 small candy eyes
Instructions
- Line a tray with parchment. Reserve 12 whole cookies for the bodies. Separate the remaining cookies into wafers, scrape away the filling and choose 12 intact wafers. Keep the extras as spares.
- Carefully cut each selected wafer across the middle to make 24 semicircular wings. Work on a flat cutting board and brush loose crumbs away so they do not interfere with the chocolate glue.
- Melt the chocolate chips in a dry microwave-safe bowl in short intervals, stirring between each. Stop when the chocolate is smooth and just melted. Let it stand briefly if it feels very hot.
- Gently twist apart one body cookie. Place a small dab of melted chocolate on two opposite sides of its filling. Set the straight inner ends of two wings on those dabs, with the curved edges extending outward. Replace the top wafer, pressing only lightly.
- Attach two candy eyes to the top of the body with tiny chocolate dots. Repeat with the remaining cookies and let stand for 15–20 minutes, or chill briefly, until the chocolate has set.
For the fuller wings shown in the illustrations, keep the cream between the wafers and halve 12 whole sandwich cookies instead of using separate wafers. This variation needs 12 extra cookies for wings rather than 8. Attach the halves to the backs of the body cookies with melted chocolate, let set, then add the eyes.
Tips for oreo bat cookies
The wings need only overlap the body slightly. Pushing them far into the filling can crack the body cookie or leave too little wing visible. Place the eyes close together for a playful expression. If a wing breaks after assembly, attach a fresh piece with another dab of melted chocolate and let it set again.

Storage and make-ahead
Store the bats in a single layer in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 days. Their wings are fragile, so use a rigid tray for transport. In a warm kitchen, refrigerate briefly to set the chocolate, then let the closed container return toward room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
